Last Sunday many of us escaped the heat to enjoy The Glass Coin’s launch party.
I snuck in late, as I almost always do, in the midst of BethAnne Fischer’s Spoken Word performance. As I stood in the hall, both Sairah and Jo beckoned me in with nervous cheer.
Next Symon Jory took the stage. “I wrote this for a girl.” He confessed with a blush. His words were laced with tender, earnest romance as he transformed his love into a myriad of objects, most notably a pillow for her to scream in, for the aforementioned girl.
All the open mic performances were tourbillions of emotion. The first, Sunshine, was sweet and fit the bright mood of the day. The next performer straddled the line of confession and vindication. Finally, we ended with Truth Is Ellipsis. Her words were delivered with enthralling showmanship inviting us to ask God and ourselves uncomfortable questions. It was a tough decision, but Truth Is Ellipsis carried the day with flourish.
Afterwards, BethAnne invited the lovely editors to come to the front and read something from their chapbook. If you get a chance, I recommend picking it up. The last story is a favorite of mine.
And finally, can we talk about the cake? The guests were treated to a lovely chocolate/vanilla cake slathered with, not too sweet, whipped icing representing what Sairah and Jo have been telling us all along. There are two delicious sides to every coin.
